Using Heat on Bleached Hair

Using heat on bleached hair can be tricky and will only add additional damage to already processed hair. But if you are anything like me, you may have wavy or curly hair and prefer the look of straight hair. Likewise, you might have straight hair and enjoy the look of bouncy curls. You can still use heat styling on blonde hair, but you must take extra precautions to protect your strands.

Depending on the method of styling you'll be using, you will be able to find a product to apply to your hair ahead of time to protect it. Flat iron sprays or creams can be applied immediately before touching your hair with a flat iron. Hair will also benefit from the use of flat iron spray if you enjoy using a curling iron. If you prefer to use a hair dryer, you will need to find a product that is applied to wet hair and is "heat activated" to begin protecting the hair as soon as it is heated up.

You will need to baby your hair as much as possible if you use heat styling in addition to lightening your hair. Use strengthening shampoos and conditioners, ideally products that contain proteins and vitamins to restore the structure of each strand of hair. A leave in conditioner helps to prevent knots while styling.

Once you finish styling your hair you may find that it feels or looks dryer than before. This is where a good finishing product comes in handy. Drug stores and department stores offer lots of variety in the form of finishing serums and lotions. Either product is to be smoothed over the hair immediately after styling to add a shine boost and make the hair feel soft and silky.

Trying to use heat styling without the use of additional products is not recommended. Once you go blonde, you must take great care of your hair or it will end up feeling and looking like straw. So be sure to be prepared in advance to style you hair with minimal added damage.
